Yearbook Journalism: Should Humor Be Used?

Humor isn´t always terribly appropriate. Often what one person thinks is funny is an insult to another and yearbook journalism can cause a lot of issues for the yearbook staff if it´s taken the wrong way. While humor can be a great way to get the point across, the yearbook editor will definitely have to make the final call on whether or not the yearbook journalism humor can be taken the wrong way or not.

The yearbook editor will need to read through any yearbook journalism with a critical eye. While you can´t necessarily protect everyone, you can certainly avoid the majority of problems by checking the articles that will run in the yearbook.

Ask yourself if anyone could possibly see anything offensive in the article you are looking at. This may not be possible to see all the time, but making the effort will usually catch the majority of issues that could come up after publishing.

Humor can often be taken the wrong way, so to avoid problems, make sure that you have at least two people read the article before it goes to print.
